Effective, Low-Cost Treatments for TMJ and TMD in Southeast, MI

TMJ Michigan: Treatment and Symptoms | My Family Dental - tmj01TMJ conditions affect roughly 15% of all Americans, according to the ADA.

TMJ (temporomandibular joints) are the joints and jaw muscles that allow you to open and close your mouth, and control your lower jaw. They give you the ability to move your jaw forward, backward and side to side.

Each TMJ consists of a ball and a socket, plus a disc between them to cushion the movement. Any condition that prevents this movement from happening can result in a painful TMJ disorder.

Don’t Ignore the Signs of TMD

Contact My Family Dental if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Jaw pain
  • Facial swelling
  • Muscle tenderness
  • Neck, shoulder or upper back pain
  • Grinding, popping or clicking sounds
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Limited ability to open your mouth
  • Difficulty biting or chewing
  • Jaw locking in position
  • Change in how teeth bite together

Your Dentist Can Properly Identify and Diagnose TMJ Disorders

At your regular dental appointment, the dentists at My Family Dental perform a simple TMJ check including testing the joints for tenderness and swelling, listening for popping and observing any difficulty in jaw movement. If any of these issues are identified, your dentist may recommend fixing an uneven bite by reshaping or adjusting teeth, moving teeth with orthodontics, or, in some cases, a bite guard at night to prevent grinding.

Common causes of TMJ disorder include:

  • Arthritis
  • Dislocation
  • Injury
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Improper teeth or jaw alignment
