Dental Bonding is Ideal for Restoring Chipped or Severely Discolored Teeth
Dental bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedures.
Dental bonding is a restoration technique where a tooth-like resin is carefully sculpted and secured to the surface of your tooth or teeth.
It creates a strong, durable covering that looks just you’re your natural tooth enamel. My Family Dental dentists perform dental bonding in each of our metro Detroit, MI, cosmetic dental offices.
We use dental bonding to restore a variety of dental problems, including:
- Repair of decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)
- Repair of chipped or cracked teeth
- Improve the appearance of severely discolored teeth
- Close spaces between teeth
- Make teeth look longer
- Change the shape of teeth
- Cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
- Protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede
There Are, However, Some Limitations to Dental Bonding
The composite resin used in dental bonding is not as strong as your actual tooth. And it isn’t as strong as the other alternatives like veneers or Lumineers®. If you choose dental bonding to repair a chipped or cracked tooth, it will eventually need to be replaced. If you bite your nails, chew on ice, pens, or pencils, or other hard substance, you will need to replace it sooner than later. How long your dental bonding will last depends on where and how much bonding was done and how well you take care of it. If you are ready to get that chipped tooth repaired, contact us for a free consultation!
With Dental Bonding, Our Goal is to Match Your Natural Tooth Color
The dental bonding process requires a skilled dental professional, but is rather simple. First, the composite resin is mixed to match your tooth’s color. Then, we rough up the surface of your tooth and apply a conditioning liquid that will allow the bonding material to stick strongly to the tooth. After that, we apply the putty-like resin to your tooth’s surface and mold and smooth it into the desired shape. When we are satisfied with the outcome, the resin is hardened and the surface is polished and finished. The result is a very smooth and shiny surface that matches your other teeth.
